A recent breakthrough in power storage technology could lead to sodium-ion batteries becoming the new standard for energy storage. Researchers at Stanford University have developed a way to make sodium-ion batteries that are not only safer, but also more efficient than traditional lithium-ion batteries. If this technology can be scaled up and commercialized, it could revolutionize the way we store energy and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Sodium-ion batteries have a number of advantages over lithium-ion batteries. First, they are much cheaper to produce. This is because sodium is more abundant than lithium, and it does not require the same kind of processing to extract it from the earth. Second, sodium-ion batteries are safer than lithium-ion batteries. They do not pose the same risk of explosion or fire, making them ideal for use in electric vehicles and other applications where safety is a concern. Third, sodium-ion batteries are more efficient than lithium-ion batteries. They can store more energy per unit of weight, meaning that they can power devices for longer periods of time before needing to be recharged.

There is a really good video from The Tesla Domain which summarizes the pros and cons of the battery technology and potential applications worth checking out. See video above.
